3M™ Controltac™ Print Film 40C is an intermediate calendered vinyl designed for flat surfaces and gentle curves where economy films become difficult to install and cast films aren’t necessary.
This material fills the gap between low-cost vinyl and premium wrap films. It installs cleaner than economy options, with more consistent handling across larger graphics, while remaining more cost-effective than cast for flat or short-to-mid term applications.
Featuring 3M™ Controltac™ pressure-activated adhesive and Comply™ air release technology, it allows for controlled positioning and smooth, bubble-free installs — especially important on panelized or large-format graphics.
3M 40C features Controltac™ technology, which uses a pressure-activated adhesive. This allows the vinyl to slide across the substrate and be tacked and snapped up until firm pressure is applied with a squeegee. Comply™ air release channels ensure that trapped air easily escapes, preventing bubbles during installation. It is the installers’ choice for fast, clean, and forgiving applications.
This versatile material sticks reliably to flat surfaces and simple curves. It is a calendered vinyl and will "tent" if applied over rivets and does not remain stuck in deep channels, sharp direction changes, or compound curves. For extreme angles and complex shapes, cast films like 3M IJ180 are required.
This opaque film (40C-10R and 40C-20R) features a gray-tinted adhesive, making it an excellent choice for blocking out dark graphics or contrasting colors underneath.
Adding lamination increases the overall thickness of the decal, making the application process significantly easier and more stable. This protective layer also boosts durability, allowing the sticker to withstand sun exposure, heavy handling, and cleaning agents much better than raw vinyl. 3M 40C boasts an expected outdoor performance life of 3 to 5 years when properly laminated. It is designed to be removable with heat within its expected performance life.
3M 40C decals are essential for versatile, temporary-to-medium-term applications where an easy-to-install, removable film is preferred. They perform reliably for partial vehicle graphics, window decals, and point-of-purchase signage. 3M 40C is also frequently used for indoor floor and carpet graphics when paired with the proper UL-approved slip-resistant overlaminate.
Every sticker is produced at true high resolution using professional-grade printing equipment. We run only commercial printers from Epson, Canon, and Durst, and we print exclusively with genuine OEM inks. Print output is held to a minimum of 300 DPI for crisp detail, clean edges, and accurate color. For designs that demand extra finesse, including smooth gradients and very small text, we use a dedicated multi-ink Epson system capable of rendering fine detail that lower-end setups simply can't match.

Outdoor life expectancy refers to both the time before ink fading occurs and the duration before the vinyl cracks or shrinks. 3M 40C typically offers an expected performance life of 3 to 5 years outdoors for standard vertical applications. Dimensional stability is excellent for a calendered film, though minor edge retraction can occur over extended periods.
