Kinds of PVC Signs

PolyVinyl Chloride signs, or as you might know them better, PVC signs, are popular for many businesses. But before you rush to buy yours, we want to help you when making your decision, as there are variables. PVC signs deliver a smooth, consistent surface and excellent ink adhesion with a single-sided protective film. They are designed to be lightweight and highly versatile. While those traits live in all PVC signs, there are some variants to consider. This brief article will talk about:

  • Thickness
  • Density
  • Colors
  • Cut options

Thickness:

There is not a single size of PVC signs. In our shop, we carry one-eighth-inch signs (3mm), quarter-inch signs (6mm), and half-inch signs (12mm). But if you’re looking for a different thickness than those, we can absolutely make it for you. In fact, we’ve recently completed jobs with the half-inch sign. The eight-inch and quarter-inch sizes are the standard in our industry.

Density:

In addition to differing thicknesses, densities of PVC signs vary as well. As for the density of plastics (and PVC is a form of plastic), there are technical properties involved. Being math nerdy real quick, density measures the mass per unit of volume. It is calculated by dividing the mass of the material by the volume and is normally expressed in g/cm 3. Sounds like a bit of technical math, and it is. The denser the sign, the higher rigidity to it. The extra density makes the sign less susceptible to damage. As a general rule of thumb, the denser a PVC sign is, the more the price goes up.

Colors:

When you think of PVC, pipes probably come to mind. And those pipes are typically white. But when it comes to signs of this material, they come like all other signs do, with different color options. You want it, we have it for you. And as a company that’s always looking out for the success of our clients, color choices are something you most definitely want to think hard about. When you place your order with us, we can go through why color contrast for your PVC signage is the way to go. For example, if you get a white sign, you’ll want to avoid light text. The bottom line is to avoid light text on a light sign, and dark text on a dark sign. Think about the color contrast on a stop sign. Very recognizable contrast, and those who came up with it knew the sign would get your attention.

Cut Options:

No sign needs to look the same. We can make yours square, rectangular, round, or basically in any shape you want. To do that, we use a machine called a CNC router. For a look at how it works, clink the link below. We find it pretty fascinating.
