We print exclusively on Oracal 3640, the undisputed industry standard for general-purpose vinyl graphics. Engineered by Orafol, this 3-mil intermediate calendered soft PVC film is renowned for its exceptional dimensional stability, which prevents the unsightly shrinking and edge-curling often seen in lower-grade materials. Oracal 3640 provides a pristine, high-white surface that optimizes ink absorption, resulting in vivid color reproduction and razor-sharp text definition. Oracal 3640 has a strong, permanent adhesive that bonds to most clean surfaces. This strong adhesive, with even light pressure, bonds firmly right away. This means you must apply the sticker accurately, as repositioning it can damage or destroy the sticker if repositioning is needed. Do not apply to painted wood or vehicles, as removal will most likely harm the wood’s paint or vehicle’s clearcoat. Painted vehicle metal should only receive low-tack or wrap vinyl. For glossy plastics and powder-coated metal, 3M IJ39 is recommended for its extreme bond.

Conformability

This vinyl and adhesive combo sticks to flat surfaces and gentle curves only. This is a calendared vinyl and does not remain stuck to sharp direction changes for extended periods of time. 3M 40, Duration X, 3M 180CV3, and 3M 175CV3 are formulated for sticking to more extreme angles.

Block Out / Cover Up

A vinyl’s block-out ability, its ability to cover up dark colors or patterns underneath the sticker, comes from having a grey-tinted adhesive. Oracal 3640 has a clear adhesive, thus is not recommended for use as a cover-up sticker. You can use Oracal 3641 for this purpose, as it has the same vinyl characteristics but has a grey-tinted adhesive for block-out purposes.

Longevity

Vinyl decals are easier to apply with lamination, as the thickness generally doubles. They also last longer in the sun and take rough handling and the use of cleaners and cloths much better. 3640 outdoors lasts 1+ years without fading unlaminated, 2+ years if laminated. Indoor life on laminated 3640 is virtually unlimited, though slight shrinking begins at about 1 year on this economy, calendared vinyl.

Frequently Used For

This vinyl is most often used for flat, indoor signs, lapel stickers, glass, full-color stickers, and even as a bag sealer, both paper and plastic. We’ve printed millions of kiss-cut Oracal 3640 stickers for gift shops, featuring local attractions, to be used on rear windows.

Quality Assured

We guarantee a high-definition print. We only print stickers with these brands of printers: Epson, Canon, and Durst. We only use factory O.E.M. (original equipment manufacturer) inks, never an aftermarket, cheap ink. Our minimum print resolution is 300 dpi (300 x 300). We have a specialized Epson printer with 9 ink colors for striking gradients and 4-point text.

Adhesive Type

Oracal 3640, also known as Orajet 3640, has a clear, permanent, water-based adhesive. The adhesive bond becomes rugged with even light pressure. Due to its clear adhesive nature, it is not recommended to use as a blockout sticker. The 24-hour rated “Stick Strength” is 3.7 lbs/inch when adhered to stainless steel, compared to 1.6 lbs/inch for low tack, Orcal 3621. This adhesive type is best applied at 50 degrees Fahrenheit+.

Vinyl Brand

Oracal’s Orajet 3640 is a 3-mil-thick white PVC vinyl for short- to medium-term applications. It is German-engineered for consistency of printing and cutting, and it is the best economy vinyl we’ve ever found. The backing paper, aka “Release Liner,” is 83# silicone-coated paper.

Best Use Cases

Oracal 3640 is an all-purpose, economy vinyl. Its most common uses are for short- to medium-term flat signage. It is frequently used for giveaway decals, as its bright white point gives it the look of a more expensive premium vinyl. Because of its consistent cut quality, shaped decals come out beautifully.

Outdoor Life

Outdoor life refers to both how long before ink fade occurs and also how long before cracking or shrinking could occur. Oracal’s Orajet 3640 lasts 1+ years outside if not laminated before fading sets in. With an economy UV-resistant laminate, this goes to 2 years+. Shrinkage of Oracal 3640 begins likewise at 1 year unlaminated. With lamination, shrinkage is not discernible until 18 months to 2 years.

High-Definition Printing

Oracal’s Orajet 3640 has an excellent white point and sophisticated matte or gloss finishes, enabling all of the advantages of modern digital printing. Whether it’s high-definition decals or you need a PMS match, “3640” never disappoints.  It is ink receptive for all modern ink sets, including Canon’s fantastic new Inkgel technology, Epson’s newish Resin ink tech, as well as tried and true Epson eco-solvent ink. Durst UV ink performs perfectly, too.
