There are plenty of different types of yard signs for endless amounts of uses. For the purposes of this blog, we’ll focus on three particular types of yard signs. They are corrugated plastic yard signs, aluminum yard signs, and alumacore yard signs and their subsets.
Corrugated Plastic Yard Signs:
Corrugated plastic yard signs, also known as coro or Coroplast™, are the most common, often-used types of custom yard signs. The term corrugated means that the signs have flutes, or channels, with which wire stakes are inserted for stability and to place in a yard.
They are durable, affordable, and weather-resistant. These are among the main factors that customers choose this type of plastic sign as the way to go. When you see political signs sprayed across lawns in your city, the large majority of them are made of this plastic material. A standard Coroplast™ sign runs 4 millimeters thick (about 1/6th of an inch), but thicker, more rugged versions are available for varying needs. What makes these lightweight plastic signs so popular? They’re versatile and very economical.
This type of plastic is the ideal substrate for short-term outdoor graphic text, color, and imagery. Corrugated plastic yard signs can be printed both digitally and silk-screened. More to come on the differences between those in a bit.
Rectangle-Shaped Signs-—The most common shape of coro yard signs is rectangular. Again, think of those political campaign signs. Realtors use them often as well. Store promotion signs are typically rectangular, too.
The most common dimensions of these that get purchased are 24”W x 18”H. Another popular size is an 18”W x 12”H rectangular sign.
Directional Signs-—Next up, directional signs. These help people find a location where an event is being held. These will often be seen at places like wedding receptions and sign-ups for little league.
And again, realtors love employing these signs. They’ll put these up at the entrance to a neighborhood to direct potential home buyers and earn more possible traffic.

It will differentiate you from your competitors, and that will stick in people’s minds. You will stand out from the herd, and it will very likely earn you new customers.

Yellow Corrugated Plastic-—This color of coro is typically used in silkscreen printing with larger orders and a one- or two-color print. Yellow coro is perfect for printing decals to place on it.
One other bonus of using this hue of coro is that it’s less expensive than printing yellow on white coro and then printing a second color. It’s more cost-efficient.
Aluminum Yard Signs:
Like corrugated plastic signs, custom aluminum yard signs, or lawn signs, if you will, are extremely weather-resistant. They are rust-proof, so precipitation in any form has no effect on the look or durability of this category of signage.
Additionally, aluminum lawn signs are strong, lightweight, and among the most durable of all yard signs out there. Aluminum custom signs have a perfectly smooth, baked-on, high-gloss factory-painted finish, and they project a first-class, top-shelf image.
Longevity: Its weather resistance coupled with its resistance to handling, aluminum signs last longer than corrugated plastic ones.
Real Estate-—Generally, one would see realtors utilizing this type of yard sign when selling a property. Typically, aluminum yard signs are printed digitally. Heavier than corrugated plastic, aluminum signs are held up by posts, which are sturdier than wire stakes. Realtor signs can go in grass or dirt, which allows for ideal placement options.
Alumacore Yard Signs:
Think of alumacore yard signs as aluminum signs on steroids. Alumacore signs consist of two pre-painted aluminum sheets bonded to a corrugated polypropylene core, which creates a strong panel that is much lighter than solid aluminum. Alumacore lawn signs are a popular choice for producing rigid, short-to-medium-term printed panels and signage for both indoor and outdoor usage.
Alumacore can be printed on both sides for use in applications where an ultra-rigid, durable two-sided sign is desired. Common uses for alumacore yard signs are for point-of-purchase displays, exhibits, architectural installations, and more. Like aluminum lawn signs, alumacore signs are generally printed via digital printing presses. While alumacore is partially comprised of corrugated plastic (containing flutes), it is also a bit too heavy to implement wire stakes for placing in a yard.
Max Metal Signs are an aluminum composite material comprised of two pre-painted aluminum panels bonded to a solid polyethylene (plastic) core.
It’s lighter in weight and more durable than either plywood or solid aluminum panels.
Its makeup resists scratching and denting better than plywood panels, as well. The core has a classier look to it that makes a max metal sign prime to be mounted on a wall or other surface. Max metal signs are best for frames and/or placement.
Digital vs Silk Screen Printed Yard Signs:
Screen printing has been around eons before digital printing came into the fold in the early 1990s. But printing digitally has become quite popular, and there are a myriad of benefits to going this route.
Screen printing produces rich, brilliant, vibrant colors on signs, not only with designs but with text and logos as well. The preparation of materials to actually hit the printer takes much longer with silk-screen printing. But, once on the actual press, the process is light years faster than with digital printing. It’s a highly efficient method within the industry and is ideal for large orders.
With digital printing, artwork is processed by computer, then printed directly onto a sign. Digital printing is best used for items that require high amounts of detail and three or more colors. The fact that the digital printer does not use screens allows for a photographic print with much more detail than with traditional screen printing.
Because the design is processed and printed digitally, this mode allows for just a single sign print purchase since there are no screens or physical setup.
